4-H'ers 'pay it forward' with pop tabs

When Walker County Extension agent Casey Hobbs' 4-H'ers collected pop tabs for Ronald McDonald Houses she never imagined she would benefit directly from her students' kindness. Hobbs and her husband, Jason, spent three weeks at the Chattanooga, Tenn., Ronald McDonald House when their newborn son, Gregory, was hospitalized.
Walker County 4-H Council members visited the Ronald McDonald House in Chattanooga Tenn., to see the facility and families who benefit from it. The 4-H'ers were among those across Georgia who have been collecting pop tabs for the past seven years to donate to RMH. Image credit: Casey Hobbs.
When you drop a coin into a donation jar, give blood or volunteer time to a local charity, you may be unable to put a face and name to those touched by your generous deed. In an instant, donors can be transformed into recipients.
Georgia 4-H agent Rebecca Thomas encouraged her 4-H’ers to collect pop tabs as a fundraiser for the Ronald McDonald House. She never dreamed she would one day be staying in a Ronald McDonald House herself.
Personally experiencing compassion
“I thought it was a wonderful organization for 4-H’ers to contribute to,” said Thomas, Chattooga County Extension coordinator. “However, you don’t realize the impact it makes on a family until you put on their shoes.”

Ronald McDonald House Receives Gifts From Various Donors
posted December 8, 2010
Chattanooga-based 3 H Group Hotels recently made a donation of canned goods and other food items to Chattanooga Ronald McDonald House. Bob Dollinger, director of operations and Lindsay Sempsrott, guest services manager delivered the items valued at more than $500. The hotel group manager says their entire staff participated in collecting non-perishable items from the Ronald McDonald House Wish List.
The food drive effort came after Ms. Sempsrott, who has served as a volunteer with Chattanooga Ronald McDonald House for 10 years, encouraged her company to make a donation on behalf of the families at Chattanooga Ronald McDonald House.
Girl Scout Troop members from East Ridge and East Brainerd also recently visited Chattanooga Ronald McDonald House. The girls brought donations of food and household items and also helped with House chores. Each and every day, 26 families call the Ronald McDonald House their “home away from home” while their children are receiving critical care at local hospitals.
